How to Find the Best Hearing Aid or Device For You:

Private Insurance typically does not cover hearing aids or personal sound amplifiers.  Therefore, the costs of these assistance devices are incurred by the consumer.  Historically, average prices for devices like these can range anywhere from $1599 - $6499 (depending on the features and extent of your hearing loss).  Experts believe that this is the disconnect.  High Costs and Lack of Coverage by Insurance Companies leave many consumers without a financially feasible option, so they go untreated.

Recent Changes in Regulations have changed the options for consumers, allowing for market competition, which in turn reduces prices.  Nowadays, there are options out there that can meet both the consumers hearing needs as well as their budget.

Tips to Consider

Ease of Use - Many consumers rush to worry about the visibility of the device, but fail to consider the ease of use.  With Aging consumers, installing tiny batteries or attempting to use Inner Ear devices can be difficult.  If finger dexterity isn't what it used to be, understand that some devices will be difficult to use, which can cause some to be frustrated and give up.

Multiple Modes - Pre-Set Modes are available on some devices.  These modes may help you optimize your hearing in a noisy environment, such as a restaurant. Or, maybe help you hear the TV more clearly at a lower volume.  Be Careful, however.  Some manufacturers offer models with more modes at higher prices.  The Key is to find a device that meets your needs, wants and budget.

Visibility - Hearing Devices come in different types and sizes.  For our purposes they are CIC (Completely in Canal), ITE (In the Ear), and BTE (Behind the Ear). Completely In Canal are the least visible, followed by Behind the Ear which users report is less visible than the In the Ear models.  With todays technology, all of the options are pleasantly surprising.  Most devices are not noticeable to others and can be worn with confidence.

Comfortable to Wear - Many consumers focus on price and features but forget that you must wear these devices every day.  Comfort is a big factor to consider.  Make sure that there are multiple size ear pieces for you to choose from.  Remember it will feel new to you at first, give it a couple weeks before you render a decision in your mind.

Many companies will offer financing or monthly payments to help consumers digest the expense of hearing devices.  This is a nice option but may cost slightly more than making a one time payment.

As always, don’t rush to judgement, take your time and use common sense.  Smart purchases are un emotional purchases.
